With college tuitions rising much faster than the rate of inflation, it has never been more important to take advantage of loans to pay for college expenses. Most people who attend college will need to take out some sort of loan to pay for their education. We hope this article will help you to understand how Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans works.

Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans can be used by students to pay for college expenses. Stafford loans can be either subsidized or unsubsidized. Both subsidized and unsubsidized Stafford loans are federal loan programs.

What are Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans?

Unlike unsubsidized Stafford loans, Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans are awarded on the basis of financial need. Like the unsubsidized Stafford loan, Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans are federal programs. You will not be charged any interest on Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans until you begin repayment. You will also not be charged any interest during authorized periods of deferment. The interest is “subsidized” by the federal government during these periods.

Who can get Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans?

If you are a regular student enrolled in an eligible program at least half time, you may be eligible for Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans.

How do I apply for Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans?

You apply for Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans the same way you apply for any other federal student aid. You then sign a promissory note. A promissory note is a binding legal document. When you sign it, you are agreeing to repay your loan. Read the agreement carefully before you sign it.

How much can I borrow?

The loan limits for Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans are listed in the table below. If you are a dependent undergraduate student, you can borrow the following amounts each year:

  • $2,625 if you are a first-year student enrolled in a program of study that is at least a full academic year
  • $3,500 if you’ve completed your first year of study and the remainder of your program is at least a full academic year
  • $5,500 if you’ve completed two years of study and the remainder of your program is at least a full academic year

If you are an undergraduate student or a dependent student whose parents are unable to get a PLUS Loan, these are the limits for Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans.

  • $6,625 if you are a first-year student enrolled in a program of study that is at least a full academic year
  • $7,500 if you’ve completed your first year of study and the remainder of your program is at least a full academic year
  • $10,500 if you’ve completed two years of study and the remainder of your program is at least a full academic year

For periods of study less than an academic year, the loan limits of Direct Subsidized Stafford Loans will be lower. Check with your school’s financial aid office to find out how much you can borrow. Your financial aid office will have further information on these loans as well as other federal loan programs.
